THE POSITIVES

  • Mason Mount: I thought he was arguably Man Utd’s best player before what I can only assume was an injury forced his substitution. He was everywhere, alert to the situation, the compete level was there and he showed why — through the totality of his game — UTD had to have him last summer.
  • Amad Diallo: Anytime a player scores a goal it’s to be celebrated as it’s hard to score in the PL. He should’ve had a brace on this day. A Diallo Double it could’ve been.

  • Diogo Dalot: The ball-in to Ahmad was exquisite and the goal-saving clearance he had kept United in the match.
  • Alejandro Garnacho: I thought the disallowed goal was soft. To the naked eye, one wouldn’t call the Zirkezee touch offside. Offside was only surmised after a re-officiating of the situation via VAR technology.

THE NEGATIVES

The Disallowed Goal: Bad. Real bad.

The Bruno Sub: Bizarre. Made no sense. Didn’t even like that spot for McTominay. The manager has a storied history of weird substitutions and he surely added to such in East Sussex today.

The Welbeck Goal: The entire back line — check that, most of the squad — was lost in tourism mode during the play.

Rashford Reduced: The hard truth is Marcus Rashford’s game is in a bad place currently. Completely ineffective today. Form is temporary, class is permanent, but alarmingly, the performances to start this PL term have been below board.

FINAL TAKE

Manchester United let a result get away today. A draw or better was there for the taking. Amad had to bury that feed from Dalot. I thought the manager negatively affected cohesion citing sketchy tactics and substitutions. Today’s result isn’t the end of the world but surely United can be better. The Red Devils host classic, forever rival Liverpool next Sunday at Old Trafford. A real test. I still believe Man Utd should sign Ivan Toney before the transfer window closes.
